Charles Edward Bates

Charles Edward “Chuck” Bates, age 87, of Newark, passed away on Monday, October 28, 2019 at his home. Chuck was born June 16, 1932 in Point Pleasant, West Virginia to the late Charles A. Bates and the late Hazel (Reynolds) Bates Legg.

Chuck was a veteran of the United States Army and served during the Korean War from 1952-54. He retired from Buckeye Linen after 40 years of service and had also been a brick layer. Chuck enjoyed arrowhead hunting, fishing, feeding the birds and loved tending his garden and flowers, especially his roses.

He is survived by a son, Charles Lloyd Bates; daughter, Deborah D. Webb; grandchildren, Josh Webb and Jared Webb; brothers, George N. Bates and William F. Bates; sister, Alvina Rajchel; honorary children, Sherrie Sullivan, Danny Seals and Pam Futrell; honorary grandchildren, Amanda Seals, Crystal Hutchison and Brandy Seals; honorary great-grandchildren, Tray Hutchison, Lexi Hutchison, Madison Harvey, Landon Bingman, Vallon Bingman and Bryson Vingman.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marcella Bates; longtime companion, Shirley Seals; and an infant brother.

Inurnment will take place at a later date in Newark Memorial Gardens.
