A memorial service celebrating the life of Darlene Valgene Schumaker, 80 of Newark, formerly of Lake Havasu City, Arizona, will be held on Thursday, May 18, 2023 at 3:00 p.m. at Criss Wagner Hoskinson Funeral and Cremation Service, with Celebrant Clifford Mason officiating. Darlene will be buried next to her husband in Lake Havasu Memorial Gardens in Lake Havasu, Arizona. Darlene was born in Columbus, Ohio on September 29, 1942 to the late Arthur J. “Mike” and Jacqueline (Smith) Adkins. She passed away on May 11, 2023 at the Embassy of Newark. Prior to retirement, Darlene was a registered nurse, traveling around the country for many years. She enjoyed playing video poker, the lottery, gardening, drinking her coffee with Baileys, was an animal lover and enjoyed spending her time with family and friends. Survivors include her daughter, Catherine Powell; granddaughter, Nicole Powell; sister, Debbie (Ron) Hare; brother, Daniel (Lisa) Adkins; stepchildren, Michael (Chris) Schumaker and Robin Comston; step-grandchildren, Melinda Hicks, Brian Schumaker and Brandon Schumaker; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Edward Schumaker; brothers, David Adkins and Donald Adkins; and stepfather, Art Bradford. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Darlene to the Licking County Humane Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Darlene was a woman who found joy in the simple pleasures of the desert and the thrill of boating on the lake. Her spirit was as resilient as the quail she loved to watch, and her love for Arizona was unyielding. She knew how to appreciate the stillness of the sunsets and the sound of the wind in the cacti. Her memory will continue to inspire us to find beauty in nature and cherish the moments spent with loved ones. Criss Wagner Hoskinson Funeral and Cremation Service is honored to care for Darlene and her family.
