Douglas Allen Griffin

Douglas Allen Griffin, 77, of Newark, Ohio passed away on January 6th, 2025. He was born in Londonderry, Ohio on November 18, 1947, to Phil and Grace (Detty) Griffin.

Doug spent 39 years teaching as an intervention specialist, retiring from Heath High School.  Doug also enjoyed a 56-year career in coaching high school football, cross country, track and his true passion, basketball.  In his career, Griff, coached at Rio Grande, Pioneer, Vinton County, Wellston, Heath High School, The Ohio State University-Newark, and Newark Catholic.  He was known by his colleagues, students, and athletes as a caring, generous and fiercely passionate mentor and coach.

Doug enjoyed OSU football, college basketball, the Cincinnati Reds, western films, bluegrass music, French bulldogs and spending time with his loved ones.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving family: his wife Suzanne (Bentley); sons Aaron and Hayes, stepchildren James Kohl Atkinson & Adrienne Atkinson; grandchildren Robert, Trent and Cameron, and numerous friends and former athletes.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents Phil and Grace (Detty) Griffin.

At Doug’s request, there will be no funeral service, but a celebration of life will be held in Doug’s honor later this spring.
