A funeral service, celebrating the life of Edwin C Broekhoven Sr., 93, of Thornville,will be held on Monday, December 15, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of The HOSKINSON Funeral Home, 56 S Main St., Thornville. Burial with full military honors will follow at Lutheran Reformed cemetery, where he will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife Mary, who died February 4, 1999. Edwin died Wednesday, December 10, 2014 in Newark following a brief illness. He was born January 18, 1921 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of the late Leo and Martha (Boski) Broekhoven, and was raised by his late uncle and aunt John & Loretta Broekhoven. He was a graduate of Columbus South H.S., a former member of the Christ the King Catholic Church in Columbus, and retired after many years of service with the Jefferies Manufacturing Co in Columbus. He served honorably in the US Army, during WWII in the Pacific theatre. He enjoyed traveling, playing cards, dartball and carpentry projects. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman. He lived for his family. His favorite saying was: Im in pretty good shape for the shape Im in. He is survived by his daughters: Manetha (David) Lyle and Michell (David) VanDyke Jr., of Thornville, Daughters-in-law Margaret Broekhoven and Karen Wells; his grandchildren Mary (Tom) Hannan, Patricia (Drew) Forgrave, Leslie (Andrew) Clouse, Allen (Megan) Lyle, Trey and Wyatt Van Dyke, Michael and Melissa Broekhoven; his 9 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sons: Edwin Jr., and Mike Broekhoven, sister: Leona Mathias and brother: Leo Broekhoven. The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 14, 2014 from 2-5 p.m. at the funeral home, 56. S Main St.,Thornville, 43076.
