A homegoing service for Elizabeth Peterson “Liz” Smith, age 81, of Newark, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 2, at Criss Wagner Hoskinson Funeral Home. Burial will take place in Welsh Hills Cemetery.

Friends may call from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home, 179 Granville Street in Newark.

Liz was born March 8, 1940 in Newark, Ohio to the late Hiawatha Lester Franklin, Sr. and the late Frances (Peterson) Franklin. She passed away on Sunday, October 24, 2021 at the home of her son in Huntington, West Virginia.

Liz was a member of Trinity AME Church in Newark, the Elks Sisters, American Legion Auxiliary, and the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed shuffleboard and was the American Legion Champion. She also enjoyed playing cards and taking trips to visit the casinos. Liz was an excellent cook and was especially known for her delicious macaroni and cheese.

She is survived by her children, Douglas (Angie) Franklin of Huntington, West Virginia, Lamar Franklin of Gahanna, Pepe Franklin and Robert White, both of Newark, and Fawn Hadnot of Columbus; 17 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren and one on the way; brother, Luther Benjamin Franklin, Sr. of Columbus; sister, Frances G. Franklin of Columbus; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Jean “Peas” Hadnot; siblings, Hiawatha Lester Franklin, Jr., JoAnn M. Jackson, Beatrice Mae Franklin, Ralph Louis Franklin and Richard Louis Franklin; and her maternal grandparents, Maude Peterson Johnson and Luther Peterson.
