Fern Reed Dales

A funeral service, celebrating the life of Fern Reed Dales, age 79, of Newark, will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Criss Wagner Hoskinson Funeral Home with Pastor Mark Ledbetter officiating. Burial will follow at Hanover Cemetery.Fern was born in Buchanan County, Virginia on June 22, 1936 to the late Cleveland and Statsie Belle (Deel) Dales. He passed away peacefully at his residence on April 18, 2016 while surrounded by his loving family.Prior to retirement, Fern worked at Owens-Corning Science and Technology for over 30 years. After retirement, he worked at Park National Bank for many years. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, throwing horse shoes, bowling, and cherished family get-togethers and family reunions. He had an uplifting personality, enjoyed socializing and never met a stranger.Survivors include his loving wife of 49 years, Geraldine (Hess) Dales, whom he married March 11, 1967; son, Tim Cade; daughters, Lisa Shaw and Jennifer Dales; great granddaughter, Destiny Cade; brothers, Herbert (Betty) Dales and Vadia (Betty) Dales; sister, Beegie Reece; two great granddaughters; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a daughter, Rita Lynn Mullins; son-in-law, Willie Shaw, Jr., sisters, Merky Helton and Birchie Helton; brothers, Anderson Dales, Dallas Dales and Ola Dales.A memorial bench will be dedicated to Fern and his son-in-law, Willie Shaw, Jr., to symbolize the special bond between them and their love for family and nature. Contributions towards this memorial bench may be made in c/o Dawes Arboretum.
