A funeral service celebrating the life of Gary Dean Maring, age 78, of Newark, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 31, at Criss Wagner Hoskinson Funeral Home where military honors will be observed by the Licking County Veterans Alliance. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, January 30, at the funeral home, 179 Granville Street in Newark.
Gary was born November 9, 1940 in Newark, Ohio to the late Leo Sherman “Toad” Maring and Betty Constance (Smith) Maring. He passed away on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at The Laurels of Heath.
Gary was honorably discharged from the United States Army where he faithfully served with the 82 nd Airborne from 1959-62. He was employed with Kaiser Aluminum where he had been a fireman and had also been a firefighter with the City of Newark. Gary enjoyed reading, traveling, singing and playing the guitar. He had a strong faith and was always seeking to learn new things.
He is survived by a son, Christian D. Maring of Newark; daughter, Kimberly Dunlap of Lancaster; grandchildren, Amanda, Brady, Terri, Carrie and Will Dunlap, and Tara, Brody and Dylan Maring; sister, Cindy (Mike) Leers of Pickerington; brother, Michael “Mick” Maring of Tallahassee, Florida; uncle, Will Sheley of Heath; nieces, nephews and many cousins.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Chillicothe V.A. Hospital or a veterans group of one’s choosing.
