A Homegoing Service for Geneva E. Black, 92, of Heath, will be held on Friday, August 25, 2023 at 12:00 Noon at Criss Wagner Hoskinson Funeral Home with Pastor Tom Pound officiating. Burial will follow in Newark Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, August 24th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Geneva was born in Newark, Ohio on August 16, 1931 to the late Samuel and Geneva (White) Shackleford (the Whites were decendents of Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemmings). She passed away on August 17, 2023 at Licking Memorial Hospital. Geneva retired from Owens-Corning Fiberglas. She enjoyed painting, ceramics, puzzles, knitting, making jewelry, crafting, cooking, Ipad brain games, traveling, and she actively worked out at Unity Fitness; but most importantly was the time she spent with her loving family, especially family gatherings and the annual Christmas breakfast. She was a member of Trinity AME Church in Newark. “Mom’s last week on this earth was so amazing, she was filled up and overflowing with love, laughter and joy, while traveling and visiting with family. God is good!” Survivors include her children, Michael (Jackie) Black, Cheryl (Alfred) Hill and Kenneth (Juneal) Black; bonus children, Steven Black, Thomas (Becky) Black, Lisa Black and Craig (Angie) Black; daughter-in-law, Ora Black; brother, Daniel (Marie) Shackleford; sisters, Rebecca Black, Kathryn Thomas, Brenda Greene and Deborah (Glenn) Bower; Sisters-in-law, Gloria Shackleford, Sheryl Ryuse, Donna Shaw, Adrianne Cherry, Frances Maxberry and Hope Ellis; grandchildren, Nolana( Lonnie), Michael Lee, Kenya, Sean (Tylisa), Michael (Nicole) Jr., Shaherah, Kareema, Kimberly ( Demra I), Roger Jr, Takeshia, Mequan, Rashawnda (Matt), Mason, Talisa, Roy Quintin (Amanda), Shontaya (Joe), Chelsea, Tiffany, and Elijah; 46 great grandchildren; eight great great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and extended family members and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Roger Black; grandson, Jermaine Mitchell; sisters, Peggy Mathews, Esther Thompson, Helen King, Norma Jean Shackleford and Cyntha Shackleford; brothers, Samuel Shackleford III and Raymond H. Shackleford. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Geneva to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
