Howard E. “Boots” Warrell passed away on December 15, 2023 at age 95. He was born August 25, 1928 to James Elmer and Lenore Berger Warrell in Claysville, Pennsylvania. He was baptized and a member of Claysville Christian Church, attended grades 1-12 in Claysville Schools and graduated in 1946.
He worked for Hazel Atlas and played Sandlot baseball for S. A. Meyer and Scott Motors, both championship teams.
He played baseball in Olean, New York in the Pony League (a minor league team of the St. Louis Browns) and in Hopkinsville, Kentucky Kitty League. In 1951 he was drafted into the army and served two years in Korea. While in the army he played baseball with the 160th regiment. When he returned home he played baseball for Hopkinsville, KY (minor league of Philadelphia Athletics) and Hot Springs, Arkansas. Boots was later inducted into the Washington County Chapter, Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.
In 1954 he married Dorothy Sogaard. Boots gave up baseball but not his love for the game, and began a lifelong career of selling lumber with 84 Lumber, Wickes and Strait and Lamp, retiring in 1993. He enjoyed shooting pool, fishing and golf. He and his wife enjoyed auctions and searching for baseball memorabilia and paperweights. Boots also enjoyed taking care of Twin Beech Gardens, where he and Dorothy have resided since 1968.
Preceding him in death are his parents, sisters Dorothy (Quention) Canan, Louise (Donald) Plants and Lola (Carl) Ingram.
Boots will be profoundly missed by his loving wife Dorothy “Dottie”, his wife of 69 years, son Arthur (Ann), son Robert (Sue, deceased), daughter Mary Lynn (Douglas) Delp, grandsons Christopher (Tricia), Michael, Zachary (fiancée Kimmy Jo and son Nolan) Warrell, Brandon (Ariel) and Blayne Delp, great grandchildren George and Bobby Warrell, Landan, Camden and Adley Delp, sister-in-law Arleen Wood, and many nieces and nephews.
Boots had a great sense of humor. When frequently asked how he got his nickname, he enjoyed telling a different story every time. He truly loved all of his family and friends.
Private inurnment in Kirkersville Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Veteran’s Administration or Hospice of Central Ohio.
