John Thomas "Jack" Scanlon, Sr.

A funeral service celebrating the life of John Thomas “Jack” Scanlon, Sr., age 77, of Newark, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 7, at Criss Wagner Hoskinson Funeral Home with Pastor Tom Myers officiating. Burial will take place in Cedar Hill Cemetery where military honors will be provided by the Licking County Veterans Alliance. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 6, at the funeral home, 179 Granville Street in Newark. Jack was born June 22, 1944 in Newark, Ohio to the late John B. and Hazel Louise (Hannum) Scanlon. He passed away on Friday, October 1, 2021 at the Selma Markowitz Care Center (operated by Hospice of Central Ohio). Jack was a graduate of Newark High School. He was a Vietnam veteran and faithfully served his country for 20 years in the United States Army. He then became employed with Walker Manufacturing where he was a supervisor. He went on to work in security at Denison University and later at Harry & David, from which he retired. Jack enjoyed fishing, league bowling and golfing. He was a member of the VFW and was an avid OSU Buckeyes football fan. Jack had a great sense of humor and was known to teach “twerking” to almost anyone. He will be remembered as a very generous person who would always help others, especially those in need. Jack had a ready smile and a twinkle in his eyes and he will be greatly missed. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Sharon M. (Davis) Scanlon, whom he married February 4, 1970; son, John T. (Barbie) Scanlon, Jr. of Newark; daughter, Pamela L. Scanlon of Newark; 11 grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; brother, Robert (Linda) Scanlon of Newark; sister, Joann Carruba of Dayton; an uncle, Jim Scanlon of Newark; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Kim Scanlon, in 2003; and two brothers, Patrick Scanlon and Ronald Scanlon. Memorial contributions may be made to the Foundation for Hospice of Central Ohio. Criss Wagner Hoskinson Funeral Home is honored to care for Jack and the Scanlon family.
