James Carpenter

A Funeral Mass, celebrating the life of James Hershal Carpenter, 91, of Thornville, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 10, 2017, in the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Somerset, with Rev. Fr. Stephen Carmody as celebrant, and the Rev. Deacon Gene Dawson. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Somerset.James died Sunday, August 6, 2017, in Lancaster, following an extended illness. He was born March 16, 1926, in Zanesville, the son of the late Howard J. and Grace M. (Vogt) Carpenter. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Somerset. He was a volunteer fireman with Thorn Township Fire Dept. having attained the rank of captain. Jim was a skilled machinist and mechanic and was employed with Detroit Harvester, Sakas Inc. and retired from Mid State Power Equipment. Jim was kind and generous with his talent, time and treasure.He is survived by his loving family: children Tim (Marcia) Carpenter, Cathie (Dean) DeRolph, Chris (Jim) Foura, Cynthia (Jeff) Ritter, Betsy (John) Founds, Nancy (Tony) Landis, Jimmy (Carmen) Carpenter, Steve (Renee) Carpenter; 22 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 2 on the way, 1 great-great grandchild and one on the way; brother Francis (Rita) Carpenter and sister, Teresa Smith, sister-in-law Martha (Mrs. Paul) Carpenter; many nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Charlotte Ann (Wood) Carpenter in February 2017, whom he married on June 18, 1947, his daughter, Janet Tener in 1997, a brother, Paul J. Carpenter and sister, Marguerite McFarland and brother-in-law Bill Smith.The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 9, 2017, from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home, 56 S. Main Street in Thornville, where Vigil Services will be held at 7:45 p.m.The family prefers that memorial contributions be directed to Thorn Township V.F.D., 13770 Zion Rd, Thornville, Ohio 43076.
