James Luther Hamilton

May 19, 1944 — April 22, 2024

After a long illness, but surrounded by family and friends, James Luther Hamilton (Jim) went to be with his Lord on April 22, 2024. James was born on May 19, 1944, deep in the coal mining hills of Hellier, Kentucky. James is preceded in death by his parents Lark and Ethel (Bartley) Hamilton, and three infant sisters, Nancy, Mazel, and Julie. James will be greatly missed by his surviving family including his loving wife of 56 years, Barbara Ann (Yoho) Hamilton; his cherished daughter and son-in-law, Maria Dawn and Mike Jordan; and his prized grandsons, Michael Chase Jordan and Mason James Jordan, all of Thornville. Not to be forgotten are the family pets – Buck the Bird and Elvis the Cat. James is also survived by his loving sister and brother-in-law, Fairy and Art Mynes; nieces, Hilary Haynes (sons Michael and Bradley), Trena Smith and family; aunts, Lorain (Paul) Kennedy and Freda (Keith) Hamilton; and the ‘co- grandma/grandpas’ - Russ (Karen) Jordan who are the parents of Mike Jordan. James looked forward to phone calls and visits with his many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors including Ted Strouth, Michelle Trunick-Sebben, Terry (Chris) Gibson, Mark (Rita) Blanton, Eddie (Cathy) Bartley, Johnny (Kathy) Strouth, John and Kathy Mynes, Wendy Jordan, the Stephens family of Monroe County, and too many others to name. James moved from Kentucky to Columbus in his youth where he attended Evertt Junior and Central High Schools. James spent a great deal of his life working in the commercial painting field, demonstrating his dedication and skill in his craft. Outside of work, he was an avid hunter, fisherman, and collector of many things, finding joy and fulfillment in the great outdoors and the treasures he discovered. James was a great family man and there were many vacations and camping trips with his family to Canada, Virginia Beach, Lake Erie, Florida, and the Outer Banks. The family wants to recognize those who nourished James in his spiritual health from the Outville Presbyterian Church, including Pastor Amy House, Pastors Steve and Kay Merold, the Hites, the Saunders, and many others. Gratitude goes out to the doctors, nurses and staff of Riverside, OSU, and Licking Memorial Hospitals who provided James with excellent health care. Special thanks go to Doctors Castle, Diaz, Mehl, and the care of the extraordinary and remarkable Dr. Aring who cared for James for 20+ years. Thanks also to the caregivers that came to James’ home including the kind and attentive nurse Nichole and the very special DJ, whom he so looked forward to seeing for physical therapy visits. Barbara sends many thanks to her co-workers at the Ohio Department of Public Safety, their neighbors at Buckeye Lake, and the owners and staff at Thornville Hardware who provided support for the family at this difficult time. Memorial and Celebration of Life Services are scheduled for what would have been James’ 80th birthday on Sunday, May 19th, 2024. Services will be held at Hoskinson Funeral Home, 56 South Main Street in Thornville, with doors opening at noon and a brief service at 1:30 pm by Pastor Amy House. Immediately following, lunch will be served 5 minutes away at one of James' favorite Buckeye Lake spots - Amvets Post 51, 9293 Township Road, Thornville. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to one of the following organizations: Amvets Post 51, Outville Presbyterian Church, Hospice of Central Ohio, or your favorite charity. Hoskinson Funeral & Cremation Service in Thornville is honored to care for James and his family.
