James Dean Mason, 60, of Newark, passed away at Licking Memorial Hospital on December 30, 2022. He was born in Newark, Ohio on April 4, 1962 to the late William Randolph and Patricia Eleanor (Hopkins) Mason. James proudly served his country in the United States Army. Prior to retirement, he worked for the Village of Granville Police Department for 27 years, retiring as police chief. He was a former member of the American Legion, Fraternal Order Police and Newark Moose Lodge. He enjoyed watching football and spending time with his wife, pets, family and friends. Survivors include his loving wife of 20 years, Romona L. Mason, whom he married September 16, 2000; brothers, William R. (Vickie) Mason, Jr., Richard P. (Michelle) Mason, Mark D. (Sherry) Mason and John R. (Renee) Mason; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Joyce K. Trace. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date. Criss Wagner Hoskinson Funeral and Cremation Service is honored to care for James and his family.
