James Frederick Mathias

A celebration of life for James Frederick Mathias, 86, of Thornville will be held at Thornville Methodist Church, on Saturday August 24, from 2-4 p.m. with welcoming remarks at 2 pm and with a reception to follow in the church social hall. James was born September 6, 1937 in Columbus, the son of the late George and Manetha (Dougherty) Mathias. He passed away peacefully at his home on Buckeye Lake on Saturday, July 20, 2024. He was employed by the White Westinghouse Corporation until their closing, after which he worked maintenance for Columbus Christian School and The Ohio State University, prior to his retirement. James loved riding his motorcycle and spending time at the local body shop. He also refereed local basketball games and officiated at baseball games for many years. He was a Methodist by faith. James is survived by his loving family: His wife the former Susan Brown, whom he married on September 12, 1960 and with whom he enjoyed a 63 year marriage. His children Renata (Stephen) Hallam, Matthew (Miriam) Mathias; his grandchildren Zoe Hallam (Jason Richter), Mason Mathias, Micala Hallam and Maxwell Mathias; his two great grandsons Ashton and Nolan Richter; his only living sister Patsy Fosnot; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his 9 brothers and 5 sisters. Honoring James wishes, he will be cremated and his cremated remains returned to his family. The family prefers that memorial contributions be directed to the Thornville Methodist Church, P.O. Box 253, Thornville, Ohio 43076.
