Jane Ellen Burns DeWitt Baumann, age 86, of Hebron, died peacefully in Naples, Florida on February 17, 2017.She retired from Columbus Public Schools in 1996, following a lifetime of experience in the district. She was a 1949 graduate of Columbus South High School. She graduated from Ohio University with a degree in Fine Arts in 1953, where she served as President of Phi Mu sorority.Janes passion for public education led her to teach in Columbus Public Schools, and she retired as chair of the English Department at Linden-McKinley High School. She loved nothing more than inspiring a love of reading in young people, a legacy that extended far beyond her teaching career. She was an active member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Columbus.She was preceded in death by her parents Claude and Margaret Winckelman Burns, her beloved husband Frederick W. (Bill) DeWitt and grandson David Baumann, Jr.She is survived by her beloved husband James L. Baumann; children and stepchildren Mike (Linda) DeWitt, Sue (Bill) Eubanks, Matt Baumann and Beth Caldwell, Meg (Tom) Mathues, Jim (Debie) Baumann, David (Nancy) Baumann, Lisa (Dave) Baumann Fischer and Stephen Baumann; and dear cousin Fred Winckelman. Her legacy will be extended by her 23 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, in whom she inspired her love of reading and education.Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 from 1:00-3:00 and 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Kirkersville chapel of Hoskinson Funeral and Cremation Service, 285 E. Main Street, Kirkersville.Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 23, 2017 at 12:15 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 2001 Northwest Boulevard, Columbus, Ohio 43212. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery in Columbus.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the scholarship fund for Columbus City Schools graduates that she helped to establish.
