John Albert "Jack" Degler

A memorial service celebrating the life of John Albert Jack Degler, age 92, of St. Louisville, will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, May 19, at Criss Wagner Hoskinson Funeral Home. Friends may call from 2-3 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home, 179 Granville Street, Newark. Jack was born January 20, 1925 in Davis, West Virginia to the late Albert Magnus and Dorothy (Harper) Degler. He passed away on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at Arlington Care Center. Jack was a World War II veteran of the United States Navy. He was employed with Owens Corning Fiberglas for 15 years as an electrician and then became the owner of Papa Jacks Stag Bar on 1st Street in Newark for 20 years. He enjoyed working on tractors and refurbishing machinery. He loved nature and hunting and was an avid swimmer. As patriarch of the family, he was a devoted father and cherished time with his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ida Rose (Cline) Degler; children, John Knotts of Arizona, Robin (Charles) Martin of Ogden, Utah, Amy (Keith) Carle of Martinsburg and Brett (Stacy) Degler of Granville; step-children, Beth Ann (Donald) Gayheart of St. Louisville and Steve (Cindy) Breneman of Frazeysburg; grandchildren, Hayley, Heather, Hannah, Jed, Josh, Bryson, Landyn, Ashlyn, Justin, Amber, Donnie, Jr., Christopher, Brett, Brittany, Jessica and Steven; many great-grandchildren; brothers, Rolland Degler of St. Francisville, Louisiana and Joe Degler of Gladstone, Oregon; sisters, Midge Ashbrook of Newark and Betty Mortimer of Perkasie, Pennsylvania; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a step-son, Michael Breneman; a grandson, Tyler Breneman; and seven sisters, Kathryn Arbaugh, Marie Arbaugh, Evelyn Edwards, Sue Lowry, Loas Emmons, Nellie Rhodes and Joan Rose. Memorial contributions may be made to the Foundation for Hospice of Central Ohio.
