A funeral service celebrating the life of John Albert Davis, Sr., age 89, of Newark, will be held on Friday, May 17, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Criss Wagner Hoskinson Funeral Home, with Pastor Roger Cummings officiating. Burial will follow in Hanover Cemetery, with military honors provided by the Licking County Veterans Alliance. Visitation will be held at the funeral home, 179 Granville Street, Newark, on Thursday, May 16th from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. John was born in Moundsville, WV on May 8, 1935 to the late John Grant and Hattie Myrle (Lancaster) Davis. He passed away peacefully on May 9, 2024 at his son’s residence, with JD by his side. John proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. Prior to retirement, he worked for Roper Manufacturing for many years. He was a member of the Church of God on Butler Road. He enjoyed attending auctions, yard sales, gardening, and tinkering with lawn mowers. John also enjoyed helping anyone in need and many times would donate most of the vegetables out of his garden. He will be missed by everyone that knew him. Survivors include his children, Sue (Billy) Tilley, Barb Davis and James “JD” (Cindy) Davis; grandchildren, Denna (Dave) Day, Debra (Josh) Burgett, Jimmy (Gail) McDonald, Josh McDonald, Dustin (Jane) Luckydoo, Kelly (CJ) Tilley and Ashley (Mark) Sparks; special friends, Jim and Betty Burrell, and Larry and Janet Smith; and many great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Denna “Joan” Davis; sons, David Wayne Davis and John Albert Davis, Jr.; brothers, Dale, Chester, Don, Harley and Larry; and sisters, Hilda, Wilma, Lilly and Rachel. The family would like to thank the Newark Veterans Administration heath workers, Hospice of Central Ohio and First Light Home Heath Care for all of the care that was provided to John.
