A funeral service celebrating the life of John R. Lindsey, age 85, of Granville, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20, at Criss Wagner Hoskinson Funeral Home with Pastor Wes Humble officiating. Burial will take place in Welsh Hills Cemetery where military honors will be observed by the Licking County Veterans Alliance.
Friends may call from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home, 179 Granville Street in Newark.
John passed away on Wednesday, April 13, 2022. He was born May 23, 1936 in Bryan, Ohio to the late Hugh Ames “H.A.” and Audrey Elisabeth (Makley) Lindsey. He grew up in Bryan along with his three siblings – sister Gloria, brother Hugh, and little sister Kristine. He was a standout basketball player through high school and went on to The Ohio State University, where he earned both his undergraduate degree and a Juris Doctorate.
John entered into the United States Air Force through their Judge Advocate General program and served as an officer and legal counsel prior to being honorably discharged at the rank of Captain. While stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey, he went to a party where he met the love of his life, Sandra Ann Tallman. The two married and had two children, Meg and Kirk, who they raised in a most idyllic setting in Granville, Ohio. John had a distinguished career as an attorney, serving in the office of the Ohio Attorney General as counsel for the Department of Transportation in eminent domain actions, before opening has own law office where he served his community as a talented lawyer in a diverse practice for over 25 years. He held the office of City Solicitor for the City of Newark, Ohio in the 1970s, and served for many years as a trustee at the Second Presbyterian Church in Newark. He was a voracious reader and a life-long Ohio State Buckeye fan. He was a lover of the outdoors, shooting, boating, skiing, and tennis. He was kind and wise and witty and he enriched the lives of all of those around him. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his loving family, including his children, Meg Hancock (Lance), Kirk Lindsey (Amy), his sisters, Gloria Crandall and Kristine Lowe, his sisters-in-law, Beverly Lindsey and Carol Crawford, his nephew, Robert Lowe (Karen), and his granddaughter, Samantha Chandler (Robert); as well as several great-grandchildren.
