Johnnie Hinton, Jr.

A funeral service celebrating the life of Johnnie Hinton, Jr. age 70, of Newark, will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 2, at Criss Wagner Hoskinson Funeral Home with Pastor Jeff Smith officiating. Burial will take place in Newark Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, February 1, at the funeral home, 179 Granville Street in Newark.

Johnnie was born April 6, 1948 in Newark, Ohio to the late Johnnie and Irene (Green) Hinton. He passed away on Thursday, January 24, 2019 at the Selma Markowitz Care Center (operated by Hospice of Central Ohio).

Johnnie was a 1967 Graduate of Newark High School and the Mahoning Valley Vocational School where he studied cooking and hotel and restaurant management. He had been a cook for many years at the Natoma and also at Cherry Valley Lodge for 17 years until his passing. He was a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. Johnnie enjoyed word finds, the lottery and fishing. He was an excellent cook and enjoyed collecting recipes. Johnnie was known for his delicious ribs and was an award winner of the Jazz and Rib Fest in both Columbus and Newark.

He is survived by a son, Randy Butler of Newark; step-daughters, Jennifer Lyn (David) Barton and Faith Ann (Rick) Lehman, both of Newark; step-sons, John D. Cordle and Michael A. Cordle, both of Newark, Rodney Lee Cordle of Utica and Michael D. (Pamela J.) Cordle of Thornville; twin brother, John L. (William Jean) Hinton of Columbus; sister, Willie Nell Randolph of Georgia; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Marlene (Walker) Hinton, whom he married March 4, 1988 and who passed away on September 19, 2016; and by a brother, Louis Hinton.
