Katherine Elizabeth "Kate" Smith

Katherine Kate Elizabeth (Lavery) Smith, age 92, of Buckeye Lake, passed away on Tuesday, April 17, 2018. She was born in Newark, Ohio to the late William (Bill) and Mary (Morris) Lavery on November 7, 1925. Kate grew up on West Main Street in Newark with her brother, Bill Lavery, and her little sister, Boots (Lannen). Kate was married for a time to her life-long friend, the late Tom Smith. On September 5, 1944 Kate gave birth to her only child, William (Bill) T. Smith. Life brought Kate many pleasures and theres no doubt that the steadfast bond between her and her son was the most treasured. For years Kate worked at Park Lanes Bowling Alley serving drinks and sharing laughter with many of the locals of the Newark community. Kate also bartended at Harbor Hills Country Club and was a member of the Moose Lodge in Newark. Kates hometown experiences and skill as a bartender were nonetheless exceeded by her wit and spunk! Kates courage-daring-ballsiness-backbone-nerve-grit and gutsy spirit made a lasting impression on everyone who knew her. She may have been little, but Kate had a big heart and an enormous attitude (and watch out for her left)! Forever Kate: Brave, Fearless, Bold and Strong. Kate is survived by her son, William (Bill/Smitty) T. Smith of Buckeye Lake and grandson, Phillip R. Smith of Newark. She also leaves behind numerous loving nieces, nephews and many wonderful friends.Kate was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, William Lavery, and sister, Boots Lannan. Minister Mildred Midge Fought will be conducting an Open Memorial Service for Kate at 1:00 pm on Friday, April 20, 2018 at Criss Wagner Hoskinson Funeral Service, 179 Granville St., Newark. Friends and family may call prior to the service from 11:00 am 1:00 pm to offer their respect and condolences. Interment for Katherine Elizabeth (Lavery) Smith, 11/07/1925 - 04/17/2018, will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Newark, Ohio.
