A funeral service celebrating the life of Kathleen Kathy Mae (Monroe) Smith Allen, age 66, of Newark, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 23, at Criss Wagner Hoskinson Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Wilson Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, July 22, at the funeral home, 179 Granville Street in Newark. Kathy was born January 27, 1952 in Newark, Ohio to the late George William and Rita Ann (Washburn) Monroe. She passed away on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at the Selma Markowitz Care Center (operated by Hospice of Central Ohio). Kathy was a 1970 graduate of Newark High School and had been employed for many years as a finisher at Resinoid Engineering in Hebron. She was deaf since birth but overcame her disability and never let it stop her. She lived life to the fullest and was a free spirit. Kathy was an excellent cook and was known for her delicious pasta salad. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren and was very family oriented. She is survived by three children, Billie Sue (Ignacio) Martinez, Melissa Lee (A.J.) McLaughlin and Donald Lee Smith, Jr.; grandchildren, Ben, Margarita, Gregory, Casey and Aurora Martinez; Isaac, Trinity, Alyus and Averi Kathleen McLaughlin; three sisters, Karen Ann Monroe, Barbara Kay Guthrie and Mary Dudas; a brother, Charles M. (Cindy) Monroe; step brothers, Dou (Nancy) Pound, Mike Pound and Steve (Susan) Pound; step-sister, Sherry Lynn Powell (Bob); many nieces and nephews that she adored; and her beloved cats, Cowgirl and Black. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her former husband, Donald Lee Smith, Sr. and husband, Walter Butch Allen; a grandson, Austin Lee McLaughlin; step-sister, Patty Ann Grannon; brothers-in-law, Jerry Guthrie and G. Michael Dudas. Memorial contributions may be made to the Foundation for Hospice of Central Ohio or the American Cancer Society.
