Lorene Holton

October 4, 1932 — December 26, 2021

Lorene Holton of Newark gained her wings at Licking Memorial Hospital on December 26th, 2021 after a brief illness. She was born in Wurtland, KY to the late Albert and Minnie Sorrell on October 4th, 1932. The family shortly moved to New Boston, OH until the age of ten and then moved to Newark, OH. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Howard Houck and Bernard Holton; children, Vicky Peone and Dale Houck; grandson, Conan Cameron; brothers, Ralph (Mary) Sorrell and Franklin (Helen) Sorrell; and sister, Delores (Frank) McKee. She will be greatly missed by her children, Steve Houck and Sandra (Donald) Erlenbach; brother, Robert (Carolyn) Sorrell of Mesquite, NV; sister, Connie (William) Streeter of Virginia Beach, VA.; and 7 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; plus many nieces and nephews. She graduated from Newark High School, class of 1950. She worked briefly at Roper Manufacturing and then at Holophane. She met her first husband at the Old Mill Skating Rink (Now Velvet Ice Cream), who she married and had 4 children with. She left Holophane to raise her 4 children. She returned to Holophane, where she retired, after the death of her first husband in 1966. She later married her 2nd husband in 1974 and moved near Wilkins Corner. Lorene loved to bowl, play cards, and take long drives. She was one of the top women bowlers in Newark during her prime and even bowled on the TV Show “Bowling for Dollars”. She traveled to bowling tournaments around the country. Her and her 2nd husband loved to camp and travel. They loved going to Gatlinburg, Virginia Beach, and Pasadena for the Rose Bowl Parade. Her mother, Minnie, was a devoted woman of God. Lorene never smoked, drank alcohol, or swore a word in her lifetime, due to the influence of her mother. She was a resident of Sharon Brooke the last few years of her life. They took good care of her during her stay. She took up bird watching while there, as we were always trying to keep her bird feeder full. She also enjoyed playing bingo and card games of euchre and golf. She would tell you about her first trip out of Ohio when she was a young teenager. She was invited by a couple to go to Savanah Georgia to babysit the couple’s children while they were on vacation. She didn’t really do any babysitting but enjoyed the beach. She even caught her first fish, which was huge and had bulging ugly eyes, and she never fished again. A graveside service will be held on Friday, January 14, 2022 at 12:00 p.m. at Newark Memorial Gardens, with Pastor Robert Caw officiating. There will be a celebration of her life at a later date. Criss Wagner Hoskinson Funeral and Cremation Service is honored to care for Lorene and her family.
