Marion Kay Nethers

Memorial Services, celebrating the life of Marion “Kay” Nethers, 87, of Hopewell, will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday June 29, 2024 at the Bryan Place with a reception to follow the memorial service. The family will receive friends during a gathering that starts at 11:30 a.m.

Kay was called home to be with the Lord on Sunday morning, June 2 at 7:52 a.m. with family and caregivers at her side.

Kay was born September 4, 1936 in Cumberland, the daughter of the late Herbert F. and Martha (Hickle) Cowgill. She was Co-valedictorian of Cumberland H.S., class of 1954, and received a scholarship for her accomplishments. She was the first of her family to graduate from college. She taught in the Grant Elementary School in the Putnam area; and later as a substitute teacher in the Muskingum and Licking Co. schools.  While she grew up in the Harmony Christian Church in Claysville, as an adult she worshipped at the Mt. Olive Church near Hopewell. She enjoyed patriotic attire, loved cardinals; and enjoyed educating others about flint especially the “Nether’s flint” as found on the family farm.

A great cook, she was renowned for her coconut cream cake, amongst many delicious creations.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings Gloria “ Maxine” Mead, Martha Lee Dobbins, Daryl “Jack” Cowgill and Darlene “June” Geiger, along with her beloved husband John, who preceded her in death on Feb 21, 2001, her daughter Lorrie who passed on January 7, 2016, and her step-grandson Tony Martinez.

She is survived by her loving family: Rosemary Barboza, Peggy (Michael) Petrill, Cathy (Howard) Boykin and John (Michelle) Nethers; grandchildren: Staci (Kenny Hogan) Boykin, Brent (Trisha Richardson) Boykin, William (Misty Crabtree) Morgan, Meghan (Scott) Adams, Juan Barboza, J.T., Nathan and Madeline Nethers; multiple step grand, great-grand and great-great grandchildren, along with her brothers John (Alice) and Herbert C. “Joe” (Donna) Cowgill along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

To honor Kay’s wishes memorial contributions may be directed to the Mt. Sterling Food Pantry or the Mount Olive Church, c/o Vicki McKenzie, 1705 Co Line Rd, Hopewell, Ohio 43746.

The family wishes to thank caregivers Harmony Hickman, Beth Murray, Kathy Parren, Christy Willison, and much gratitude to live-in caregivers Will and Misty who allowed Kay to stay in her family home per her wishes; and to the Shrivers Hospice team especially Jason Boggs, Christy Ater, Pam Dailey, Stephanie Borders and Amy Carpenter for their skilled and compassionate care.
