A funeral service celebrating the life of Mary Eloise Carlson, age 91, of Newark, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 12, at the First United Methodist Church, 88 North Fifth Street, Newark, with Pastor Steve Rath officiating. Burial will take place in Newark Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, June 11, at Criss Wagner Hoskinson Funeral Home, 179 Granville Street, Newark.Mary was born September 19, 1925 in St. Louis, Missouri to the late James T. and Pearl (Outlaw) Purcell. She passed away on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at the Inn at SharonBrooke.Mary was a1943 graduate of Atlanta High School. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Newark and a member of the Candelighters. She and her husband of 52 years were founding members of the Park National Bank Freedom Years and served as board members of the group. She was also a member of the Elks Ladies Auxiliary and the Harbor Hills Country Club, where she and her husband were avid golfers. She enjoyed sewing, cross-stitching, traveling, gardening and playing cards with several card groups.She is survived by three children, James F. (Suzanne) Carlson of Westerville, Steven R. Carlson of Newark and Betty Jo (Rick) Effinger of North Royalton; three grandchildren, Eric (Angela) Effinger and Michael Effinger, all of Cleveland, and Mackenzie Carlson of Cincinnati; four great-grandchildren, Tyler, Logan, Jake and Connor, and one on the way; a niece, Joyce Kay Holman, as well as many other nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon E. Carlson, whom she married March 8, 1947 and who passed away on May 28, 1999. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church.Criss Wagner Hoskinson Funeral Home is honored to care for Mary and her family.
