Mary Lillian Layman

A funeral service celebrating the life of Mary Lillian Layman, age 96, of Newark, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 29, at Criss Wagner Hoskinson Funeral Home with Clifford Mason as Celebrant.

Friends may call from 12-1 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home, 179 Granville Street in Newark.

Mary was born September 5, 1927 in Haydenville, Ohio to the late Timothy and Stella May (Hale) Dodrill. She passed away on Tuesday, January 23, 2024 at Altercare Newark South.

Mary was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening, puzzle books, mowing her yard, reading her Bible and traveling out West. She was a member of Plymouth Church.

She is survived by a son, William “Ed” Layman; two daughters, Karen Williams (Charles Cotton) and Deborah (Barry) Swinehart; granddaughter, Haley Bowles (Bobby); two grandson, Nathan Williams and Dante (Erin) Smith; four great-granddaughters, Arielle Bowles (John), Taylor Bowles (Jesse), Alanah Smith and Kiarah Smith; four great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Jack (Becky) Dodrill; sister-in-law, Virginia (the late Tim) Dodrill; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Layman, who died October 14, 1989; and by brothers, Elwood, Ted, Bob, Lauren, Jim, Joe, and Tim Dodrill; and sisters, Louise Cooperrider, Eileen Bonner, and Wilma Swartz.
