Michael L. Schumacher, 63, of Columbus passed away on July 27, 2021. He was born in Fort Wayne, IN, to Vernon and Lois (née Lunz), on July 8, 1958. He graduated from Ball State University with a B.A. in anthropology and an M.A. in school psychology. He worked in the public schools in Indiana as a school psychologist for 6 years and taught psychology part-time at Indiana University at Kokomo. After moving to Columbus, Michael earned a Master of Divinity degree at Trinity Lutheran Seminary. Michael joined Columbus State University in 1987 and taught psychology, social sciences, and cultural diversity for 34 years. He also developed a travel course on the diverse Native American cultures of the American Southwest. His students remember him for his intellect, compassion, and (self-described) antics. Michael joined Germania Columbus in 2016, where he could always be relied upon for stimulating conversation, humor, and his famous homemade mustards. He remained an active and highly engaged member until his passing. Michael’s passions were many and varied. He loved travel and international cuisine; Beethoven, Gershwin, and Pink Floyd; classic films (especially Hitchcock) and antiques; woodworking and sleight of hand; and scholarly pursuits from Thomas Aquinas to Neil Postman--to name a few. Michael is preceded in death by his father, Vernon, and his brother Jeffrey. He is survived by his daughter, Jenny, his adopted daughter, Holly Cain, his brother Kevin, and his sister, Pam Nenow. A Celebration of Life reception will be held in Columbus at a future date. Please visit www.professorschumacher.com for more information.
