A funeral service celebrating the life of Millard Merle Chesser, age 81, of Thornville, will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 22, at the Thornville Home of Hoskinson Funeral & Cremation Service with Pastor Gary Reiss officiating. Burial will take place in Zion Ridge Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. on Monday, November 21, at the funeral home, 56 South Main Street, Thornville, and again on Tuesday from 10-11 a.m. prior to the service.Millard was born December 5, 1934 in Nelsonville, Ohio to the late Reverend Carroll and Nelle (Bumgartner) Chesser. He passed away on Friday, November 18, 2016 at the Thornville Health and Rehabilitation Center.Millard was a 1952 graduate of Union Furnace High School (Hocking County) where he was a star baseball and basketball player. He retired from Kroger in Lancaster after 43 years of service. Millard loved gardening and fishing and was an avid hunter. He liked sports of all kinds and especially enjoyed watching the Sheridan Generals football and basketball teams and the OSU Buckeyes.He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 31 years, Sharon (Winegardner) Chesser, whom he married November 30, 1985; sons, Greg (Dee) Chesser of Bunn, NC, Bill (Jackie) Chesser and Dale Chesser, all of Newark; daughters, Vickie, Robin and Alice Chesser and Kay (Keith) Sothen, all of Newark, Lisa (Bill) Chafins of Thornville and Lori (Larry) Mulkey of London; 18 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; brother, Glenn Chesser of New Marshfield; sisters, Betty Wolf of Lancaster, Donna Cunningham of Spartansburg, SC and Marna Burwell of Mount Vernon; many nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law, Martha Chesser of Bainbridge and Joan Gothard of Thornville.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Lloyd and Larry Chesser; and brothers-in-law, Aaron Cunningham, Dan Burwell, Wes Wolf and Carl, Paul, Dode and Eugene Winegardner.Hoskinson Funeral & Cremation Service in Thornville is honored to care for Millard and his family.
