Paul M Whetstone

December 13, 1928 — December 11, 2020

Paul M Whetstone MD passed away peacefully at home in Millersport, Ohio on December 11, 2020, two days short of his 92 nd birthday and after a brief illness. Paul was born in Xenia, Ohio as the son of Landon and Faye (Wagoner) Whetstone. He went to Ohio State University to play the sousaphone in the marching band. He met his wife, Anna Marie, when he started attending the family’s church as an Ohio State student. They married in 1948.   Both Paul and Ann graduated from the OSU College of Medicine. After Paul graduated in 1953, he did a general internship at Mt Carmel. In 1954, Drs Paul and Ann decided to take on a medical practice in Millersport, Ohio. Their first office in the village had an outhouse in the back and a hand pump for running water. After six months, Dr Paul was drafted into the US Navy, serving on the USS Dixie , a naval tender ship in the Pacific. When he returned to Millersport in 1957, Drs Paul and Ann practiced family medicine together in Millersport for 46 years and delivered more than 900 babies. When they retired in 2000, their practice was a state-of-the-art facility that was able to attract younger physicians and ensure the continuation of outstanding health care for the town.

Dr Paul also worked to build the community of Millersport. He served for many years as the physician for the football team. He received the Friend of Public Education Award in October 2016. He provided financial support for infrastructure for school levy campaigns for Walnut Township School district, a new auditorium floor, a new track, and pay-to-play fees for students in need. In May 2017, Drs Paul and Ann were inducted into the Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging Hall of Fame after nomination from the Fairfield County Commissioners. They were married for 70 years before Anna Marie’s death in 2018. Dr Paul is survived by children Paul (Tina) in Texas, Dave (Linda) in Thornville, Judy (Dave) Westman in Columbus, and Jim (Julie) in Millersport. He is survived by 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He is remembered for his quick wit and sense of humor, and his love of travel which included every continent except Antarctica.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there will not be calling hours or a celebration of life service at this time. The family will have a grave side service. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the general fund of the Millersport United Methodist Church, 2310 Refugee St, Millersport, OH 43046.
