Richard Eugene "Dick" Mayhew

A funeral service celebrating the life of Richard Eugene Dick Mayhew, age 79, of Newark, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 16, at Criss Wagner Hoskinson Funeral Home with Pastor John Sellers officiating. Burial will take place in Newark Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, June 15, at the funeral home, 179 Granville Street, Newark, where Newark Lodge #97 F & AM will have a service at 8 p.m. Richard was born May 10, 1938 in Coshocton, Ohio to the late Charles Henry and Marjorie June (Kaser) Mayhew. He passed away on Monday, June 12, 2017 at the Selma Markowitz Care Center (operated by Hospice of Central Ohio). A 1956 graduate of Newark High School, Dick received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Ohio University and a Masters Degree in Special Education from The Ohio State University. He had been a Special Education Teacher and Work Study Coordinator for Newark City Schools for 37 years. Dick was a member of Newark Lodge #97 F & AM where he had been Past Master and was the District Education Officer for the 19th Masonic District of Ohio from 1976-79. An avid reader and history buff, Dick also enjoyed sports and was the number one fan of the Columbus Clippers and a dedicated fan of the OSU Buckeyes. He was a swimming and diving official with Newark City Schools for over 25 years. He is survived by three children, Tracy L. Miller (Frank O. Muckensturm) of Heath, Jon M. (Colleen M.) Mayhew of Granite Bay, CA and Beth E. (John) Sellers of Zanesville; grandchildren, Nathan W. Miller of Columbus, Angela N. Miller of Heath, Austin J. Miller of Heath, Michaela C. Mayhew, Kymerie E. Mayhew, Skylar M. Mayhew, Ean M. Mayhew and Rhys N. Mayhew, all of Granite Bay, CA, John I. Sellers, Matthew R. Sellers and Kaitlyn E. Sellers, all of Zanesville; great-grandson, Bransen Miller of Heath; brother, Ronald W. (Judy) Mayhew of Hereford, AZ; sister, Janice E. Wise of Newark; sister-in-law, Mary Lou (James W.) Scott of Newark; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Janet E. (Piper) Mayhew, whom he married on June 28, 1959 and who passed away on March 30, 2014. Memorial contributions may be made to the Foundation for Hospice of Central Ohio or the Newark Public Library.
