It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard F. Thompson Jr., a beloved father, brother, grandfather, husband, and friend. Richard peacefully passed away on November 11, 2024, surrounded by his family, at the age of 77. He was born on August 8, 1947, in Newark, Ohio.
Rick is survived by his devoted wife of 44 years, Linda Thompson (Mason); his two children, Lance Thompson of Newark and Lindsey Hardway (Dustin) of Thornville; Step daughter Christy Saporito of South Carolina; his three grandchildren, Garrett, Grant, and Kyndal Hardway; "Ricks little brother", Tom Thompson (Rhonda) of Nashville; nieces, Amanda Horst and Kayce Thompson; and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard "Dick" and Ruth Thompson (Meyers).
Rick is a graduate of Lakewood High School, class of 1965. He then went on to play basketball and baseball at Ashland University from 1965-67, and Waterloo Lutheran University 1972-73 where he obtained his Bachelor’s degree. After college he taught school and coached for a couple years, then started his career with Rockwell (Meritor) in Heath, Ohio. He ended his working career helping his wife manage the Harbor Hills Country Club.
Rick grew up with a passion for sports and a deep love for his family and friends. Rick had many achievements throughout his high school career. It is said that he was a phenomenal athlete in all three sports. Football, Baseball, and Basketball, “The Legend, Rick Thompson”.
Rick loved to golf, you could find him on the golf course many days throughout his life. He also enjoyed watching the Buckeyes play football and basketball. With Ricks love for sports and his love for his grandkids you could find him at most of their athletic events. He loved to watch and teach them.
Rick's family invites you to calling hours at the Hoskinson Funeral Home in Kirkersville, Ohio on Friday, November 15th from 4-6pm. Linda also invites everyone to come celebrate Rick "Rock" at the Harbor Hills Country Club Saturday, November 16th from 4-6pm after the buckeyes game for a good story and a drink.
In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Rick's Alma Mater Lakewood in support of the Lakewood Baseball Athletic program.
Rick will be remembered for his generosity, his dedication to family, and his passion for sports. His spirit lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
