Robert G. “Sparky” Yost, 86, formerly of Newark, passed away December 2, 2022, in Winter Haven, FL. Robert was born on August 17, 1936, to Harvey and Garnet Yost. Robert graduated from Newark High School in 1954 where he played football and ran track. After high school Robert joined the Navy, serving 2 ½ years in the VA 692 Squadron. Robert joined the Newark Fire Department in 1961, serving the city for 27 years. During his time at NFD he acquired the nickname “Sparky” because he often dressed as a fire dog, appearing in many parades and local festivals. Robert enjoyed the outdoors and spent many summers camping with his family. One of his passions was Boy Scouting. He was a Scoutmaster for many years. His troop produced 10 Eagle Scouts and he obtained the rank of Silver Beaver. His troop attended several Boy Scout Jamborees around the country and traveled to the Philmont Boy Scout Ranch in NM. Robert was active in church. He served as a deacon at Central Christian Church and regularly attended worship at Landmark Baptist Church after moving to FL. Robert is survived by his wife, Mary Yost, a daughter, Marilyn Brust (Ty) and son, Robert Yost (Stephanie) along with many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Robert was preceded in death by son, Michael (Kris) and sister, Barbara Hay (Paul). Friends and family may call on Saturday, December 10, 2022, from 9-11AM at the Criss Wagner Hoskinson Funeral Home at 179 Granville St in Newark where the funeral service will follow at 11:00am. Burial will follow in Wilson Cemetery where military honors will be presented by the Licking County Veteran Alliance.
