A funeral service celebrating the life of Roger S. Black, Sr., age 56, of Newark, will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 6, at Criss Wagner Hoskinson Funeral Home, 179 Granville Street, Newark, with Apostle Annette Jackson and Pastor Helen Gemmell-Miller officiating. Military honors will be observed by the Licking County Veterans Alliance. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Roger was born May 23, 1958 in Newark, Ohio. He passed away on Thursday, January 1, 2015 at the Selma Markowitz Care Center (operated by Hospice of Central Ohio). Roger was a 1977 graduate of Newark High School and was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He was employed by Buckeye Ranch. Roger enjoyed fishing, camping, grilling and was an avid motorcycle enthusiast and fan of the OSU Buckeyes. Roger loved kids and cared for over 250 foster children over the years. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Ora M. (Workman) Black, whom he married November 22, 1987; eight children, Kareema Black (fianc Anthony Smith) of Kansas City, MO, Kimberly Miller (Sgt. Demra Miller U.S. Army) of Columbus, Roger Black, Jr. of Columbus, Takiesha Black (fianc Anthony McClendon) of Columbus, Mequon Black, Rashawnda Black, Mason Black and Talisa Black, all of Newark; nine grandchildren; mother, Geneva E. (Shackleford) Black of Heath; father and step-mother, Kenneth Paul Black, Sr. and Rebecca Black; seven brothers and sisters, Michael Black, Sr. (Jacqueline) of Newark, Cheryl Hill (Alfred Hill, Jr.) of Reynoldsburg, Kenneth Paul Black, Jr. (Juneal) of Mundelein, IL, Steven Black of Heath, Lt. Col. Thomas C. Black USAF (Becky) of OFallon, IL, Lisa Black of Newark and Craig Black (fiance Angie Harrison) of Thornville; many nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins; and special friends, Victoria Black and Toni Burt.
