Russell "Sam" Smith Jr.

Russell “Sam” Smith Jr. age 80, residing in Millersport, Ohio was a proud graduate in Columbus, Ohio of Central High School class ’59 and the Ohio State University. He was a financial advisor and retired as First V.P. at Advest. Moreover, he was a true sportsman and hunted in the Rockies, the Artic Circle, South America, 3 times in Africa, and even on Lord Spencer’s estate in England. His true passion was training and competing with English Field Springer Spaniels. He was a winner of the ESSFT nationals. Always considered as a top amateur trainer/ handler of English Field Springers and in 2019 was inducted into the Bird Dog Hall of Fame in Tennessee and sanctioned several events on his property. He and his son traveled once to Minnesota and won the U.S. (United States). Pheasant hunting championships flusher division. He is survived by his sons Russ and Jonathon (Kelly), 4 grandchildren, Kyle (Amber), Miranda (John) Mack, Zachary (Malia), Carlee and 9 great grandchildren; and his dear friend Phyllis Flynn with whom he made his home the last 10 years: along with his brother Dan (Eleanor) and sister Ruth (Eula). In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Claudelene in 2005. The visitation will be held at HOSKINSON FUNERAL HOME, 56 South Main, Thornville, OH on Monday June 6, 2022, from 2-4pm and 6-8pm where funeral services will be held Tuesday June 7, 2022, at 11am. Burial will follow in Millersport Cemetery.
