"Sue" Wilma L. Bowers

A funeral service celebrating the life of Wilma L. “Sue” Bowers, age 81, of Newark, will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, June 10, 2024 with Pastor Bob Davidson officiating.

Sue was born February 24, 1943 at home in Guysville, Ohio a little after 12 o’clock noon to the late Harold E. and Wilma E. (Wires) Storer. She passed away on Sunday, June 2, 2024 at Licking Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.

Sue was employed at the Newark Air Force Base for 24 years and 3 months. She started out as a switchboard operator and then worked in the tech data library. She did a janitor apprenticeship for the position of maintenance mechanic, holding that title when she retired. She worked on the guidance systems used in Desert Storm and worked many other jobs at the base in Newark as well as at McDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida, the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida, and Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins, Georgia. Upon moving back to Ohio from Florida, Sue worked for several years at Criss Wagner Hoskinson Funeral Home as a greeter.

Sue was a member of the Second Baptist Church in Newark, the Elks, Moose, Eagles, and the CB Club. She enjoyed traveling, camping, gambling, and, most of all, spending time with her family. She had also been a foster parent for many years.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Theresa L. (Handley) and John Hughes; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, step-children, step-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, foster children, and many friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Cary Richard “Dick” Bowers, who died March 5, 2022; and by brothers, Kenneth, Roger, and David Storer; and an infant sister, Bessie Storer.
