On July 31, 2020 Susie Olivia (Phillips) Meredith Clarke, was called home to heavenly rest. She was born on September 27, 1921 in Spartanburg, South Carolina to the late Fletcher and Eunice Marie (Walker) Phillips.
She lived most of her childhood in Gaffney, South Carolina where she attended school. Her family relocated to Newark, Ohio where she met Jesse Lindy Meredith. From that union they raised six children (Warren, Eugene, Eunice, Bessie, George, and Sondra).
Susie, fondly known as “Miss Susie”, worked at the Ohio Power Company in Coshocton, Ohio from 1951 until 1963 where she cooked as a “Home Service Representative”. After the death of her first husband she located to Washington, D.C. with her daughter Bessie and that is where she met and married William Calvin Clarke. She worked as a morning cook for the Mission Hurst Seminary of Washington, D.C. until 1976. That is when the couple moved back to Newark and she worked for the Shurtz Management Company of Granville until 1994.
As an active member of the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church she worked on the User Board, was a Sunday School Teacher, and was also a part of the Bus Ministry and Prayer Warrior Ministry. Her motto was, “If I can help somebody along the way, then my living will not be in vain.”
She leaves to mourn, daughters, Eunice Meredith and Bessie (Joseph) Petteway of Maryland and Sondra Basden of Columbus; 7 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Dorothy Mintz; and nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Jesse Lindy Meredith and William Calvin Clarke; three sons, Warren, Eugene and George; and sisters, Florence Carter and Carolean Byrd.
Friends may call from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Friday, August 7, at Criss Wagner Hoskinson Funeral Home. Masks are required inside the funeral home and please practice social distancing. We will then go in procession to Cedar Hill Cemetery, 275 North Cedar Street, where a graveside homegoing service will be held at 1:30 p.m.
