A graveside service, celebrating the life of Thomas Arthur Powell, Jr., 95, of Newark, will be held on Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Cedar Hill Cemetery with Pastor Mark Pierce and the Newark Masonic Lodge officiating.Thomas was born in Newark, Ohio on April 29, 1920 to the late Thomas A. Powell Sr. and Marie E. (Glausinger) Powell. He passed away at his residence on September 23, 2015 while surrounded by his loving family and caregivers.Thomas attended Denison University while working for Curtis Wright Company. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy (department of art and design), living in New York City, along with his newlywed wife, Betty. Thomas and his wife moved back to Newark after his service with the Navy, and purchased his fathers business, Powell Electric, who for many years, donated their services for the Lighting of the Courthouse Square. He retired as owner/president of Powell Electric.He was a member of the National Electrical Contractors Association, where he served as president and past governor; was invited and inducted into the National Academy of Electrical Contracting; over 65 year member of Newark Rotary Club; over 65 years member of the Newark Masonic Lodge; served on the board of the Licking County Historical Society; board member of the Newark and Central Trust Company; member, past president and board member of Moundbuilders Country Club for over 65 years; founding member of Newark Jaycees; on the board of Dawes Arboretum; and was a member of the Food and Wine Society of Columbus. Thomas was a connoisseur of theatre, film and the philharmonic. He was an avid golfer, collected cars, was philanthropic and loved spending time with his family and friends.Survivors include his two daughters, Kathy P. (David) Miller of Newark and Karen S. Powell of New York City; two grandchildren, Thomas Duncan Miller of Cincinnati and Marcy (Andrew) G. Kneale of New Jersey; step-daughter, Missy (Russ) Bow of Granville; step-grandson, Andy Bow of Columbus; brother-in-law, Carl W. (Phyllis) Duncan of Colorado; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife of 61 years, Betty D. Powell; second wife, Christine Warner Powell; two brothers, Donald and Robert Powell; and two sisters, Eileen Smith and Juanita Myers.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Thomas to Hospice of Central Ohio, PO Box 430, Newark, Ohio 43058-0430 or to Camp OBannon, 9688 Butler Rd.
