A funeral service for Thomas Milo Powell, age 85, of Newark, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 6, at Criss Wagner Hoskinson Funeral Home with Pastor Tom Myers officiating. Burial will take place in Wilson Cemetery where Military Honors will be provided by the Licking County Veterans Alliance. Milo was born April 14, 1928 in Newark, Ohio to the late Milo Eugene Powell and the late Mildred (Baker) Powell Harris. He passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family. Milo was a veteran of the United States Navy, faithfully serving his country during World War II on the Net Tender U.S.S. Buckeye. He was an electrician for IBEW Local #1105 for over 50 years. He was a member of the Eagles, American Legion Post #85 and the VFW, all of Newark, and the Moose Lodge in Buckeye Lake. He is survived by his daughter, Robin (Larry) Riel of Utica; sons, Roger (Sue) Powell of Fallsburg and Philip Mick (Brenda) Powell of Glenford; grandchildren, Carrie Rasmussen, Terry Powell, Wesley Wheeler, Katie Mitchell, Amista Buxton and Nicole Powell; great-grandchildren, Austin Buxton, Kierstin Buxton, Kurtis Rasmussen, Caden Wheeler and Kendall Riel; a sister, Sharron Powell of Florida; brothers-in-law, Lloyd Varner of Mount Vernon and Byron Riffle of Kentucky; several nieces and nephews; a dear friend, Nancy Long; and his pals, dogs, Scooter and Pepper, and cat, Barney. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Charlotte N. (Parlet) Powell, whom he married on May 21, 1949, and who passed away on December 20, 2011; sisters, Bonnie Varner and Janie Riffle; brothers, Ronald Powell and Fred Powell; and good friend, Bob Long. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 5, at the funeral home, 179 Granville Street, Newark. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Ohio or to the Licking County Humane Society. Envelopes will be provided at the funeral home.
