Funeral services, celebrating the life of William V. Fischer, 93, of Harbor Hills, will be held on Saturday January 5, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. in the Trinity U.C.C., S. West St., Thornville, with Pastor Winfield Strout as celebrant. Full Military honors will follow the services at the church by the AMVETS, Post 51, Thornport.. Bill, well known as the Band Director at Lakewood H.S. for many years, passed away Sunday afternoon, December 30, 2018, in Newark, following a brief illness. He was born September 1, 1925, in Wheeling W.V., the son of the late William V. and Pauline (Raybould) Fischer. He served honorably in the US Navy during WWII, aboard the USS Philadelphia and the USS Missouri as a member of the Navy School of Music. He was a graduate of West Liberty State College, W.V., with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education, and Ohio University, Athens, with a Master’s degree in Trumpet performance. Bill taught in West Virginia and Pennsylvania prior to teaching for many years in the Lakewood Local Schools. He was also a member of the American Federation of Musicians, Local #142; and served as assistant director of The Wheeling Symphony, The Florida Symphony, as well as a member of the Mansfield and Fire lands Symphonies in Northern Ohio. He was a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ in Thornville, where he sang in the choir, and the Hebron Post #185 of the American Legion. Bill is survived by his wife of 53 years, Phyllis, whom he married on November 26, 1965; his daughters Judith Fischer, Beth (Roger) Brown and Lori (Norm) Rohn; his eight grandchildren Brandon, Jennifer, Sara, Steven, Justin, Matthew, Kellyn and Timothy; his brother James (Carolee) Fischer, his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Keith (Pam) Berry, along with many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Robert and sister-in-law Jacqueline Fischer. The family will receive friends on Friday evening, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Kirkersville home of HOSKINSON Funeral and Cremation Service, 285 E. Main St. in Kirkersville.
