Wirt Reed Barrera, age 78, of Thornville, passed away on Sunday, August 27, 2017 at the Thornville Health and Rehabilitation Center surrounded by his loving family and friends after an extended illness. Wirt was born May 18, 1939 in Hillsboro, Ohio to the late Joseph David and Grace Cleon (Reed) Barrera. A graduate of Hillsboro High School, he and his family moved to Thornville in 1961. Wirt served in the Ohio National Guard for six years and as the Chief of Police in Thornville for 20 years. He retired from Rockwell International in 1994 after 31 years. He was a loving husband, father, grandpa and great-grandpa. Wirt had a love for cars and was always looking for the next best deal. He was a practical joker and loved imitating Fire Marshal Bill. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Judy, whom he married May 23, 1957; children, Rick (Cindy) Barrera of Glenford and Lisa (Tommy) Woods of Columbus; five grandchildren, Jason (Bethany) Barrera, Jarrod (Kelsi) Barrera, Josh Barrera, Jerel Woods and Erica Woods; 12 great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends, Skip and Marie Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Dave, Eddie, John and Frank Barrera; a sister who died at birth; and a special great-grandson, Tate Barrera.
